The fourth day of the sale will be entirely devoted to Bergé’s famous book collection (sales of which began back in 2015); he collected rare manuscripts dating as far back as the fifteenth century, such as Le Propriétaire des choses, a forerunner of the modern idea of the encyclopaedia. Books from his friends – Jean Cocteau, Jean Giono and Bernard Buffet – are also on sale, illuminating aspects of his personal life and political leanings.
